EPIC Embraces New Technologies

EPIC Fuels has been playing an ever-increasing role in growing acceptance of sustainable biofuels and biofuel blends used in jet aviation.

Aviation biofuel is a biofuel used for aircraft. After a multi-year technical review from aircraft makers, engine manufacturers and oil companies, biofuels were approved for commercial use in July 2011. Over the last several years, EPIC has provided both technical and logistic expertise in programs for sustainable fuel alternatives, including Boeing’s first-ever flights using a green diesel blend during the ecoDemonstrator 787 flight test program in December, 2014 and the Boeing ecoDemonstrator 757 flight with U.S.-made “green diesel” biofuel in June, 2015.

The focus of the industry has now turned to second-generation sustainable biofuels (sustainable aviation fuels) that do not compete with food supplies nor are major consumers of prime agricultural land or freshwater. Through participation in many industry-leading pilots and programs, EPIC has gained unique experience and insight into how biofuels interact with fossil jet fuels. For example, in 2016 EPIC assisted Alaska Airlines for two flights using a blend of biofuel produced from non-edible, sustainable corn. Later that year, EPIC Fuels provided expertise in fuel blending as well as technical and logistical support to Alaska Airlines’ first commercial flight using the world’s first renewable, alternative jet fuel made from forest residuals; the limbs and branches that remain after the harvesting of managed forests. The alternative jet fuel was produced through the efforts of the Washington State University-led Northwest Advanced Renewables Alliance (NARA).

Throughout these and other projects, the company has amassed significant experience, including blending data, logistics, transportation and the rigorous testing required to ensure the fuels meet or exceed industry safety standards.

As a fuel provider, EPIC Fuels recognizes the need to find alternatives to petroleum-only based jet fuel.  We’ve participated in multiple demonstration flights to identify and fast track technologies that can improve the environmental performance of aviation and gained unmatched experience with blending fuels. We are looking forward to playing a key role in more programs in the future to help the aviation industry address a critical need in securing alternative fuels.
